What is a Blog?

The term “BLOG” comes from two words … WEB LOG. The concept is a place where you can share your thoughts, feelings, knowledge and general “whatever” with the rest of the world. There are many different reasons to create a Blog and for this conversation let’s focus on two major categories. Business Blogs and Personal Blogs:

Business Blogs:

In general, many businesses will create a Blog within their website while others may just create one as a standalone property. The purpose for Business Blogs can vary while some just share general accounts of the work the business performs and others try to position that business as a leader in its field.

A great method for Business Blogging is simply letting the world know what you do and how you do it. For example, if a dentist blogged about the worked he did with his patients, it would be a great way for potential patients to understand the type of services that dentist offers. If a patient comes in with a cavity that needs a root canal, write a blog post saying:

“Today a patient came in with a pretty bad cavity. We took x-rays, and decided they would need a root canal. We performed the root canal and placed a crown. We will have the patient come back in about 4 weeks for a routine check up and cleaning.”

I would expect this dentist to be a bit more detailed in their description of the work done, perhaps including where the cavity was, whether posts had to be put in and any other relevant information. This should only take about 20-30 minutes to write and if done every day will yield an impressive showcase of the businesses services.

Personal Blogs:

Have something to share? Want to tell the world how you feel about current events, local happenings, or just your thoughts in general? A Blog is a great way to do that. Some may have the mindset of “who cares what I have to say?” Well, people do, and if they don’t, do it anyway. Use your blog as a sounding board for anything and everything.

Want to be a bit more focused with your blog? Find a topic or two that you are passionate about and just start writing. If you are really into sports, write about your favorite team. If you are into politics, go for it (see my note below about representing yourself while keeping your business in mind). A Blog can be a great way to vent or spark up conversations with people all over the world. Create a quality Blog and you will be surprised with the type of feedback you get and the type of people you connect with.

Networking:

Networking is important in both a personal and professional capacity. Blogging and other online activities are a great way to meet people, share ideas, and obtain new business. Remember though that for the most part, whatever you say online can be found with a simple search and may be there for a very long time (even if you take it off). That is why Online Reputation Management is so important.

Your online “REP”:

Just like in high school, your reputation can make or break you. If you create a Personal Blog, be mindful of the affect it may have on your clients’ perception of you and in turn, your business.

When I speak to someone for the first time, whether it be on the phone, at a networking event or just casually, I often do a simple Google search to learn more about them or their business. It is important to have a positive online presence and reputation for both yourself and your business. More importantly, make sure you are comfortable with the way you represent yourself. If you don’t mind putting up whatever you want and sharing all of your feelings with the rest of the world, then do it. Just be prepared for any backlash or “Negative Rep” that may ensue.

Control & Privacy:

If you have personal content online that you do not want people in your professional atmosphere to see, either remove it or make sure that privacy settings are enabled where applicable. Facebook, for example, has just instituted a whole new set of privacy options that will make it easier for you to choose who sees your content. You can also choose to remove your Facebook page from SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages). This should be utilized by most people in an attempt to better control your Online Reputation.

I would suggest staying away for “touchy” subjects when blogging. Try not to get into politics because your customers may not share your same viewpoints and could lead to a loss of business.

What to do know:

Start Blogging.

Register a domain name (www.mygreatnewblog.com) or use a free service like WORDPRESS, BLOGGER (by Google), or BLOGSPOT. Start with the default template (the look and design) and just begin writing. Try different topics until you find ones that you like and other people respond to and then keep going. Promote the blog by linking to in from your Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn accounts. If you have any questions, ask someone in their teens or twenty’s, they will usually be able to give you a hand. If you are still having trouble, just Google it, you will find the answer.

Welcome back friends. If you are reading this, I assume you have either enjoyed the 2 previous installments of “Tech Talk” or simply just have nothing better to do. If it is the later, I would also assume, with a bit of dismay, that you have not headed my advice to get out there and start using some of the social media platforms we have discussed. Remember, networking is a full time gig and there should always be someone to drop a line to or chat with. And there is my fancy little segway into our next topic of “Following Up and Staying in Touch”.

Let me propose a question. When you meet someone for the first time and find there is a general interest whether it is business or personal, what would you say the next logical step is? Usually, an exchange of contact information (cell phone number, business card, email, etc) is performed and conversations come to an end. You part ways with a “talk to you soon” or “see ya later”. What happens after that is very important. If you are making a friendly or personal connection, follow up time may not be as time sensitive as it is when business is involved. It is generally noted that follow up contact should be made within the first 48 hours of the previous contact. This is vital in assuring that any information or ideas the two parties may have exchanged is fresh and the intricacies of that conversation are not forgotten. Keeping track of contact information is another extremely important part of this whole puzzle and there are tools we can utilize to help us keep everything organized.

It is probably safe to assume that at least 75-80% of Chamber members have a PC with Windows installed. Windows machines generally come with some form of Microsoft Office and included in the software package is Outlook (an email, contact and calendar software). If you are part of the minority, I am sure you use Apple software that is comparable or perhaps have MS Office & Outlook installed. Outlook is a very powerful solution to help you A. Stay in touch (with the email portion), B. Keep your contacts organized (with the Contact portion), and C. Keep yourself organized (with the calendar).

When I meet someone new or spark a business interest with someone, I will add their contact information to my Outlook Contact and make a note in my Calendar to contact them in a day or two (or at an agreed upon date and time). I also make sure to add any notes or comments with their contact info (just like writing on the back of a business card). This helps me assure that I do not forget any important details in my old age. Be sure to get as much information from them as possible and be sure to obtain their email address and website address. The email address is great for a casual follow up contact, just to say “It was great to meet you and speak with you the other day. I look forward to speaking with you and learning more about your business soon.” We often shy away from speaking with people on the phone thinking we will be a “bother” and in this case, the email option allows the other person to get back to you at their availability.

Visiting someone’s website is a fantastic way to expand on any information you gathered during your conversation and hopefully learn a lot more about what they do and how you can benefit from a relationship with each other. From the other side, make sure that YOUR business card has your necessary contact information and if you have a website, put it on there. Make sure that your website’s content is up to date and that it represents yourself and your business in a way that coincides with the reputation you work so hard to achieve. A quality website is definitely a topic that we will discuss in an upcoming article.

Let’s take a quick review of what we’ve learned. Make sure to get as much pertinent contact information from your new connection as possible. Input this info into a program like Outlook and assign a reminder to follow up with this person within 48 hours to say “hello and thanks for chatting”. Be certain that all of your information is accurate and up to date and that any website you have represents your business in a way you are satisfied with.

Utilizing some pretty simple methods we can make sure that our valuable time spent networking and “meeting and greeting” does not go to waste. I think for our next article I will discuss what you can do with all of the contacts you have gathered and how you can incorporate them into your Facebook and LinkedIn efforts.

Thanks for stopping by again for another “Tech Talk” article. I hope you have enjoyed these articles and would love to get your feedback or questions. Please feel free to contact the Chamber at BellmoreCC (@) aol.com or myself directly at chamber (@) UBE-Inc.com with any ideas for future articles.

Continuing in our “Tech Talk” series, let’s stay on the “Social Media” highway and make a pit stop at LinkedIn (that’s it for the corny analogies… promise). If you remember some of the points made in our previous article, we discussed some of the benefits and capabilities of Facebook and how using it properly can help to increase business and your networking potential. At its heart, Facebook is a social media application meant for PEOPLE to talk/connect to other PEOPLE. LinkedIn, on the other hand, was developed for, and maintains a goal of, Business to Business connections.

While building your personal network is extremely important, it is vital to remember that building your business’s network is important as well. LinkedIn allows you to create a personal profile which, instead of focusing on your favorite hobbies and TV shows, asks about your work related background. Past jobs and current careers are the focuses of your profile and will, in-turn, connect you to others in your company, job field, and industry. LinkedIn has many of the same functions and options as Facebook does and allows you to post a picture, connect to friends, and join groups and more.

One of the main differences between LinkedIn and other social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, etc), is many of the tools focus around business and industry. Create a group for example about “Long Island Small Businesses”, and connect with other small business owners in the local community. While Facebook has the same function, the audience of LinkedIn generally does not consist of anyone not in the work force. High school and college kids for example would have very little reason or desire to join this business environment.

LinkedIn is pretty basic in comparison to the powerhouse Facebook platform but is leaps and bounds ahead of what I consider to be a waste of time in Twitter. Let’s save the “Tweeting” (a new term for the act of using Twitter) for another article.

That’s it for now. I hope you all enjoyed the second installment of “Tech Talk”. If you have any questions or comments or would like to suggest a topic for a future post, please feel free to contact the chamber at BellmoreCC (@) aol.com or myself directly at chamber (@) UBE-Inc.com.

this post was taken from an article written for the Bellmore Chamber of Commerce’s Monthly Newsletter

So lately everyone is talking about 2 things, the recession and social media. While most may think they are unrelated, my opinion is they are. Most members of this chamber are small business owners and rely heavily on the income of their businesses to support their lifestyles and their families. A tight time for consumers has meant even tighter times for retailers and small business owners. The question then is how to draw more people to your store to maintain monthly sales and revenue. Advertising and marketing can be a tool to lean on during these times and, when used properly, should help you achieve this goal. As we all know, there are many ways to market yourself and your business and also advertise for new customers.

Utilizing different marketing/advertising outlets is vital in this economy. Whether you choose ads in local papers, special sales and promotions or radio/tv advertisements, everyone is searching for the right tools to drive more business. I would like to speak a bit about a tool not used by many in this chamber to help in your business promotion. Social media, (Facebook, Twitter, or a website blog), are great, inexpensive, and even fun tools, that can be used by all and will surely be beneficial for your business and your consumers. For this article, I would like to focus on one piece of social media in particular, “FACEBOOK”.

When Facebook first started years ago, it was strictly for college students and in order to join you had to have an “.edu” email address. Times have changed and of course these limitations have changed. With the change in rules and the huge influx of 40+ something’s (now the quickest growing demographic on the site), Facebook is primed for use by businesses looking to tap into their specific target audiences and achieve branding, lead generation and inexpensive and effective marketing strategies.

While there is an advertising platform available on Facebook (much like that on Google and Yahoo), my suggestion today comes in the form of working on branding and general increased exposure and consumer awareness of what you do, as well as what services your business can offer. By being part of the Chamber, each of you is making an effort to NETWORK your business to those you feel can use your service. Just think of Facebook another chamber, another networking outlet. Use it to connect to people you may have lost touch with, other people offering your services, or directly to your past clients.

People you may have lost touch with:

Using Facebook as a way to get back in touch is great. It’s always nice to see how your high school or college sweetheart turned out or to reconnect with you best friends from years ago. Finding a way to use these connections to generate SALES is where the benefit comes in. Be sure to expose every one of your “friends” to your business and your services. Make sure they have a full understanding of what you do and why they NEED you. Facebook is free but the revenue potential can be priceless (thanks MasterCard).

Other people offering your services:

It is extremely important to have a good grasp on the market for your service/industry. What are others charging for your goods? What are they doing to promote their business and advertise for it? What are some new technologies or special goods that your competitors are offering that you may not know about or may not be offering? Being on top of your “game” is vital to securing the business of consumers as opposed to losing their business to your competitors.

Marketing directly to your past clients:

I am sure I do not need to explain the benefits of Customer Loyalty, but for the sake of this article, let’s dive into it a bit. Positive Consumer Experience should be something that all businesses (especially small businesses) strive for in their day to day operations. Happy customers refer new customers. Keep a database of your client’s names, phone numbers, and email addresses. Connect to them on Facebook by creating a Group or Page for your business. Providing “fans” and “members” of your groups and pages with special coupons, advanced purchase options, etc will help generate more sales and help you present your business as a leader in your industry.

Now that you have this info, what to do next:

If you do not have a facebook account, get one. It is free and only takes a few minutes to get set up. If you have any questions about how to set it up, ask your kids or grandkids. Promise them you won’t snoop or spy on them and they should help you. If not, send me an email and I will assist you. Create your facebook profile, invite your friends (you can import a list of emails or just type in your friend’s names). Once your profile is created, develop a GROUP or PAGE for your business and invite all your friends to that. Again, for assistance just ask for help. Most kids will know how to do this.

All of these suggestions are good for business regardless of economic conditions but while so many are looking to cut back and save, knowing what all of your options are will help you make it through the rough spots and aid in lead generation and sales.

This has been the first installment of what I hope to be an ongoing series. Let’s call it “Tech Talk” for the time being. Consider it as a general forum for information about the internet and how it can be used to help improve your business and expand its reach in your market and industry. If you have any questions about the information in this article or internet in general, let me know and I can cover it my next “edition”.

Thanks.

Tip #1 - Organized Campaigns & Ad Groups

Typical Search Engine PPC Account (Account – Campaigns – Ad Groups – Keywords & Ads)

Considering that Search Engines put a ton of importance into Keyword Relevancy, it is good to organize your Pay Per Click Account into organized campaigns and further into specific ad groups. A great way to start is by breaking your account out based on the services you may offer. For this example, let’s use a mortgage broker company. The company offers residential loans, commercial loans, and jumbo loans, each of which can be used as campaigns.

Within these campaigns, we can build out ad groups based on the types of programs offered for each. Residential Loans may have Conforming Loans, Stated Income Loans, Interest Only Loans, etc. Equally, the Commercial Loans campaign may have the following ad groups: Construction Loans, SBA Loans, Bridge Loans, etc. Now that we have our campaigns and ad groups set up, we can use a Keyword Tool (Tip #2) to determine the keywords to include in our ad group. Lastly, we will set up Ads.

A highly organized and structured campaign will allow for easier management but will also help bring your Cost per Click down.

Tip #2 – Keyword Research

In order to get the most out of your ad group and your account as a whole, it is important to perform some keyword research with a Keyword Tool. Google’s Keyword Tool (free) as well as Wordtracker (paid) and Keyword Discovery (paid) are very helpful resources for this information. Use these tools to determine which keywords generate the most traffic and apply them to your ad groups. Be sure to keep your groups organized and keywords relevant to each other and your site.

Tip #3 – Geo Targeting

For websites that only service a particular state or region, Geographic Targeting should be utilized. The targeting options across most Pay per Click Platforms can get pretty specific making it easy to target only the customers you really want. Furthermore, by only displaying to your target audience, your account should maintain a better ROI (return on investment), afford you higher quality traffic and in turn a better overall performance.

Tip #4 – Setting Budgets

Budgeting capabilities are one of the absolute best advantages of Pay per Click accounts. In the “old days” online advertising worked on a pay for impressions (ad views) basis. Now, for the most part, most platforms allow you to utilize the PPC (actual interaction with your ad). This allows for a much higher sense of value for your dollar. The idea that you are only being charge when someone actually clicks your ad and visits your website is very powerful.

When setting your budget it is important to understand that your ad will be shown based on a complicated formula. The website will usually try to spread your ad views out through the day and if you budget is too low, you may only show a few times an hour. It is important to test different budgets and CPC’s (cost per clicks at the keyword level). Try a high budget the first week or so, then bring it down a bit. See what works best for you and what gives you the biggest returns. Once the visitors click your ad, it is important to Convert them, or have them perform your desired action. Let’s talk a bit about Tip #5 – Landing Pages.

Tip #5 – Landing Pages

This is a large topic but for the sake of this article, let’s just cover it briefly. Landing Pages are a great tool and are vital in converting your traffic. A Conversion is anything that you determine you want a visitor to do on your site. If you have an ecommerce site, a conversion may be purchasing something. For others, it may be filling out a form or application. Sometimes it just might be visiting a certain part of your site where you offer information. By having a quality landing page, you can be assured that you will be getting the most out of your visitors and that your money is going to good use.

That’s it for this set of tips. Check back soon for more.

Here are 5 useful Tips to remember when designing a new website or revamping an old one. Read on to find out how Navigational Structure, Internal Linking, Meta Tags, Keyword Research, and your Domain Name all come into play when utilizing Web Design Best Practices.

TIP #1 - Navigational Structure (more info about Site Structure)

A solid navigational structure is important to the success of any website. It is important that links and menus are displayed in an easy to find and fairly intuitive manner. Most sites display links as a bar across the top of the page or on the left/right side. Because of this, most of your site users will expect the links to be in one of those locations. Try not to be too fancy as you may confuse and frustrate your users. Additionally, Internal Linking (TIP #2) is very useful in helping users find their way throughout your site.

TIP #2 - Internal Linking (more info about Internal Linking)

Providing useful and relevant links from page to page within your site is TIP #2. If you mention one of your Keywords within a paragraph, it may be useful to link to another page within your site where a user can find more details about that Keyword. Search Engines generally look highly on a quality internal linking structure as it lends itself to user-friendliness and ease-of-use.

TIP #3 - Meta Data

Implementing appropriate Meta Tags (Title, Keywords, and Description) is TIP #3. Search Engines tell website designers certain information about how their ranking systems work and the information that is important to include on a website to assure you rank as high as possible. One of the most important things Search Engines tell us is to be sure to utilize our Meta Tags to inform them (the engines) of what our website is about. By performing some Keyword Research (TIP #4), we will determine what keywords should be included in our Meta Tags.

TIP #4 - Keyword Research

Search Engines provide some great tools for Keyword Research. Beyond the Engines, there are websites available where, for a fee, you can perform detailed research to determine the best phrases and terms to focus your website around. Google’s Keyword Tool (free) as well as Wordtracker (paid) and Keyword Discovery (paid) are very helpful resources for this information.

Utilizing these tools will help with all aspects of your website’s development including creating your Meta Data, choosing the best Domain Name (TIP #5) and including relevant terms within your site’s content.

TIP #5 - Domain Name

Choosing the best domain name is yet another important piece to this puzzle. It is always a good idea to use your business name as your domain as it helps with branding and marketing. However, what many people don’t know is that your domain name is a great place to bump up your keyword relevancy. If you can include your top keyword as your domain name – websitedesign.com it will help with your ranking and overall site traffic. Many sites use what is called a vanity URL whereas the business name domain – mybusiness.com – may forward to the keyword rich URL – websitedesign.com. This is a fairly simple function to set up and will assure that you are taking advantage of yet another piece of that SEO puzzle.

For more information on any of these tips or any other information that is included on our site, please feel free to contact us at anytime.

The names of the pages within your website are very important to your overall optimization efforts and are a great place to add some relevant keywords. If you are able to have a Domain Name (www.yourwebsite.com) that includes your Primary keywords, you are already taking a good step. Unfortunately, this is often not an option. Many businesses especially like to have their business name as their domain name. This is acceptable and just means you must be sure to use all other opportunities to insert your keywords.

Be sure to reflect your primary keywords in your page names

Google AdWords is a service provided by Google that allows customers to place text advertisements on the SERPS (Search Engine Result Pages). When you do a search with Google (and most other Search Engines), you often see two sets of results. Ones on the left and ones on the rights (usually marked “Sponsored Results”).

The Sponsored Results are advertisements. One of the great things about this service is it offers smaller websites and businesses the opportunity to show on the first few pages of Google for their desired Keywords. Having used all 3 major Search Engine’s versions of PPC Service (Pay Per Click), I would have to say that Google’s is the best.

The basic steps in setting up a “Campaign” are as follows: (this can be applied across most engines)

Sign up for a new account – entering your contact information and a credit card number will usually get you started.

Choose some keywords – pick the words that you would like to show up for. ie. (if you sell hardwood flooring, you may want to pick words like hardwood flooring, wood flooring, wood floors, etc)

Set your CPC (Cost Per Click) – you can choose what you would like to pay for a click on each keyword. This is important because you CPC, as well as some other factors, determine whether you ad will be 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. Depending on the Keyword and the competition for that keyword, you could pay anywhere from $0.05 to $10.00+. Having an Optimized website will help keep these costs down significantly

Set your budget – one of the greatest benefits of using PPC services is that you only pay for the clicks that you receive. Unlike pricy, and often ineffective, newspapers ads, you only pay when someone actually interacts or clicks on your ads. There are no minimum budgets and you can even choose to only show your ads on certain days of the week, certain hours of those days and to certain Geographic locations (look for more information about GEO-Targeting coming soon)

Link to your website – choose the page or pages that you want to send people too once they click on your advertisement. This is important especially for larger sites and sites that offer a variety of services.

That’s It! – for the most part, that’s all there is too it.

Remember, these “steps” are to serve as a basic outline to the process for better understanding of how it works. There is much thought that should go into choosing keywords, setting CPCs, Budgets, Landing Pages (which pages you link to from the ads), etc.

In addition to being able to set your own pricing, time of day, etc, one of the most beneficial tools offered with this service (and as a stand-alone service as well) is Google Analytics, which offers insight into visitor statistics and website usage data. More Google Analytics info.

In the past, as well as currently, websites have been made using Frames. Basically, a frame is a way of presenting your website allowing for faster navigation. Because only part of the site (or a frame) has to load for each page, the time it takes for that page to load tends to be less. Google states:

“Frames can cause problems for search engines because they don’t correspond to the conceptual model of the web. In this model, one page displays only one URL. Pages that use frames or iframes display several URLs (one for each frame) within a single page. Google tries to associate framed content with the page containing the frames, but we don’t guarantee that we will.”
http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=34445

The overall upside of having a site in frames is completely outweighed by the downside of its effect on search engines and the ranking process.

It has been my consistent experience that many website designers & website design companies choose to omit “SEO Best Practices” from their projects. I have heard from many of my clients that they were either not told about what SEO is (Search Engine Optimization) or how important it is to the success of drawing traffic

to a website (especially new sites). Unfortunately for these individuals, they have been led down a path they are unfamiliar with and left to fend for themselves when the Website Designer delivers the “finished” product.

My first piece of advice is as follows: If you have a website currently in development or are planning one in the near future, make sure that you discuss SEO with your designer and make sure they are going to utilize generally accepted best practices in optimizing your site for search engines. If they are not familiar with SEO or try to tell you “yea… you don’t need that on your site. It won’t help” or “your site really isn’t big enough for SEO”, Run Away! Ha-ha, while running away may not be an option, it should not be difficult to find a free lancer to collaborate with the Designer.

At the very least, Meta Tags should be implemented [Meta Title, Meta Description and Meta Keyword tags that should be included on every page of your site and should be unique and relevant to the specific page] The purpose of these tags is to inform the Search Engines of the information contained within the page.

Secondly, if you recently completed a website project and your site is not optimized, contact your designer or another individual/company about adding SEO to your site.

Lastly, if you have had a website for a while (3+ years) and your site is not optimized you should consider a redesign as well as the necessary Optimization. In the past, as well as currently, websites have been made using Frames. For more information about Frames, visit “Why are designers still using frames?” Furthermore, there are many internal navigation strategies and url-naming strategies that have become more prevalent over the past few years.

While a site redesign may be necessary in some cases, a simple round of SEO may work for you as well. When I say “simple round” I am not in any way attempting to say that SEO is a simple process, but a low budget version of SEO [META tags and some onsite optimization] may help increase traffic to your site a bit.

Most importantly, don’t feel alone. Most websites that you come across are NOT optimized. It is unfortunate that people do not realize the benefits and really the necessity of SEO in their sites. SEO is a practice that has been gaining major traction in the internet realm. Without it, you site will fall in line with the other billions out there. Take the necessary steps in presenting your site in the proper why to the Search Engines and you will be rewarded for it.
