The Future of Facebook

I just wanted to share a little bit about what I think we will be seeing from Facebook in the (not so distant?) future.  I have been thinking about this for some time now, ever since I saw a video posted by Marc Zuckerberg a while back.  His attitude came across to me as a, “we’ve got major plans for this thing, and you ain’t seen anything yet”.  What I think we will see soon:

I foresee Facebook being less like a website and more like an OS (operating system).  I would think that Facebook will become more of a one-stop-shop for many of the things that you do online.  If you consider how much time people already spend on Facebook it would only be natural for you to do more of the things you do online, through facebook.  I would say that there is a good chance that the facebook of our future will act more like a desktop application then a browser accessed website.  Think of it somewhat like how AOL used to function (just with a modern day internet connection).

You would have an icon right on your desktop that when opened would bring you to your Facebook account.  Some of the features and applications that I believe will be accessible are Email (see the project titan post), Instant Messaging, Shopping Portal, Search Engine, Video Interface (like YouTube) and more.  Again, it only makes sense to bring some of the other things that you do online into the Facebook interface.

Time will tell, but this is for sure, Facebook isn’t going anywhere.
